Dimensions: 12 x 17.5 inches (30.9 cm x 44.5 cm)

Description: This authentic antique map of South Dakota was ordered under the auspices of the Department of the Interior, and depicts the sparsely settled state as it was known to explorers and mapmakers at the turn of the twentieth century. The Black Hill Forest Reserve had already been set aside, and is colored in green. Indian reservations are included, some very large, such as the Pine Ridge and Rosebud, the Standing Rock and Cheyenne, as well as smaller ones in the center of the state.

This series of maps shows the advances made in map-making by that time, and includes a clear and comprehensive legend. It also denotes by color the townships containing coal (lignite) and those thought to contain coal, also lignite.

Condition: This map is in A+ condition on the recto, with very slight soiling of a fold line. The verso has soiling of the fold lines.
