By: American Airlines
Date: 1945 (Published) New York
Dimensions: 23 x 31 inches (58.4 x 78.7 cm)
This vintage pictorial folding map from 1945 illustrates the routes of American Airlines and a number of other airlines with whom they shared both domestic and international connections. International destinations include Mexico, Cuba, the Bahamas and southern Canada. The verso boasts twelve strip maps depicting major hubs which were already being developed by the airline industry at the time of the map’s publication.
The map provides a wealth of information regarding the country and its industries just as WWII was ending. Myriad decorative vignettes leave few open spaces on the face of the map, depicting iconic industries and destinations, and lesser-known places and peoples as well. Canada’s fabled Royal Mounties, indigenous peoples of North America, wildlife, monuments, and topographic features are all presented in detail. Relief is shown by hachures and spot heights.
Condition: This folding map is in A- condition. Very minor damp staining of one lower corner and minute separations at some folds.
