A Correct Chart the Mediterranean Sea, from the Straits of Gibraltar to the Levant; From the latest and best Observations: For Mr. Tindal's Continuation of Mr. Rapin's History.

By: Richard William Seale

Date: 1745 (published) London

Dimensions: 13.5 x 27.75 inches (34.5 x 70.5 cm)

An attractive and unambiguous sea chart of the Mediterranean with countries, coastal regions, cities, and small villages clearly marked throughout. The sea is filled with rhumb lines, identified islands, and anchorages from the Straits of Gibraltar to the Syrian coast.

Seal uses a series of symbols to note the extent and accuracy of positional observations taken by navigators. Along the coasts capital cities are distinguished by Roman print while other towns labeled in an italicized font. In the to right portion of the map an inset titled "the Road of Leghorn" focuses on the Italian port city of Livorno in the region of Tuscany. A large Rococo style title cartouche fills the interior of Africa's Barbary Coast.

The map was published with several others in “Tindal's Continuation of Rapin's History.” Nicolas Tindal (1687 – 27 June 1774) was the translator and continuer of the History of England by Paul de Rapin originally published in 1727. The thirteen volume set was a great contribution to British historiography of the 18th century, which at the time was sorely lacking in similar works.

Condition: Map is in A+ condition in its original uncolored state with vertical folds, most of which are also original and one tiny rust hole near Constantinople. Full margins surround the image which presents a strong print impression on paper that is evenly toned with age.
