This is an original, hand colored aquatint print of Michigan Avenue as it looked in 1863. This example is signed by Raoul Varin and numbered 4 of 125. These prints were later produced in greater numbers for the Century of Progress World's Fair, but none of those reprints were signed or numbered.
Terrace Row was one of Chicago's most fashionable and upscale residences on Michigan Ave. Some of the most prominent Chicago families lived here. Michigan Avenue is shown as it was pre-Chicago Fire. with numerous horse and carriages dotting the street while children play in the sand on the other side.
Illinois Central Station is depicted in the background on the right hand side with the main line running over the waters of Lake Michigan. This area would be filled in by the rubble from the Chicago Fire and eventually become Grant Park.
Condition: This print is in very fine condition with lovely color and full margins on all sides. The piece is currently framed and can be sold / shipped as such for an added shipping cost or removed from the frame and shipped alone at our standard low rate.
