1878 Scenes and Incidents on Coney Island
By: William Allen for Harper's Weekly
Date: August 10, 1878 (dated) New York
Dimensions: 20.75 x 13.5 inches (52.7 x 34.3 cm)
This is a remarkable wood engraving after sketches by William Allen Rogers of active scenes around Coney Island, located on the south shore of Brooklyn, New York.
Rogers provides amusing views of 19th century beach-goers from bathers enjoying the surf, kids riding donkeys, folks watching a puppet show, a group roasting clams. One interesting scene involves a beach vendor selling sunglasses (right center). Two inset views featured in this print include the Brighton Bathing Pavilion and Manhattan Beach by calcium light, which is otherwise known as "limelight," a type of stage lighting once used in theatres and music halls.
Condition: This print is in B+ condition with one edge tear in the left margin that has been repaired on the verso and two light stains, also along the left margin. Otherwise, this print exhibits lovely eye-appeal.
