1935 Territory of Hawaii - Samoa
By: Ruth Taylor White
Date: 1935 (published) Boston
Dimensions: 8.5 x 11.5 inches (22.2 cm x 29.2 cm)
A delightful two for one as this map features both the Territory of Hawaii and Samoa in a lower left insert. The map is filled with natural wonders, locations of historical events, various agricultural products (coffee, tobacco, sugar, and pineapple), and the people that could be found on the islands in the late 1930s.
Pearl Harbor naval base is shown on Oahu, and would be bombed by the Japanese just six years after the publication of this map. This fascinating pictorial map of Hawaii and Samoa was published in 1935 by Ruth Taylor.
The map appeared in the atlas published by Taylor and her husband Frank Taylor entitled “Our U.S.A. - a Gay Geography,” with the maps done by Ruth and the text by her husband. The map provides local color and flavor, depicting cultural stereotypes, agriculture, industries and activities of the territory.
Note: Image of map description is not on the verso of this map.
Condition: This map is in B condition with bright color on clean paper, but a one inch tear in the lower right corner that has been repaired on the verso.
