1829 West Indies
By: John Thompson
Date: 1829 (published) Edinburgh
Dimensions: 19.6 x 23.6 inches (49.8 x 60 cm)
This is an authentic antique map of the Caribbean by John Thompson. The map was published in Edinburgh circa 1829.
This fine copper plate engraving came out of Thompson’s General Atlas of the Several Empires, Kingdoms, and States in the World. While the map centers on the Caribbean, it also includes portions of South America, Central America, Mexico, and the Southeastern United States. Extraordinarily detail is given with notations on both physical and political features, as well as undersea elements, banks, and shoals. Thompson also notates several American Indian tribes in both North and South America. Florida is divided between east and west as they had separate heads of government for a brief period in time. Spanish control is shown to extend from the west bank of the Mississippi all the way south to Panama. The size, attention to detail, and design of this map makes it one of the more appealing maps of the Caribbean basin to come out of the early 19th century.
Condition: Map is in A+ condition, with a strong impression, good margins, and healthy contemporary coloring over nice clean paper.
