By: Benjamin Warner

Date: 1820 (dated)

Dimensions: 25.5 x 16.5 inches (64.75 x 41.9 cm).

Warner's map of the United States was one of the first separately issued maps to show the the country occupying lands from coast to coast. Much of the detail in the western portion of the map was based on maps by Lewis and Clark, Humboldt, Melish and Pike. This map is one of only a few maps issued from 1818 to 1820 that show mythical rivers of the west including the Buenaventura River that runs from the Great Salt Lake (only half of which is mapped) to the Bay of Francisco. Within the Rockies (just north of the 42nd parallel) is a note stating "Clark's canoes stop 3000 miles from the Mississippi."

Texas is shown within a very large Spanish Territory, just south of the Arkansas Territory that encompassed much of present day Oklahoma. The false island of Philippeaux is still shown to exist within Lake Superior. Midwestern forts, Indian Tribes, and California Missions are shown with detail throughout the map. This type of map is a must have for anyone looking to complete a U.S. western expansion map collection.

Condition: Map is in B condition with some small fold splits (restored on verso), minor toning, and some narrow margins.
