Dimensions: 20 x 13 inches (50.8 x 33 cm)

This is an authentic antique map of the Cape of Good Hope by De La Rochette. The map was published by William Faden in 1782 out of London. There was a later edition released in 1795 with some revisions and additions, but this is an example of the first state.

This detailed engraving displayus contemporary knowledge of the Cape of Good Hope and its surroundings from ‘Klipping Eyland’ to ‘Caap Falso’ and from the islands off the coast to the Drakenstein Mountains in the east. Larger towns such as Constantia and Stellenbosch are shown along with native kraals, river crossings, farms, and small settlements. Two keys reference numerous islands, bays, and physical landmarks on the mainland that include Table Mountain. Within the bays and surrounding the islands are numbers indicating average depth in meters. The map cartouche displays a title engraved upon a cliff face with palms, native huts, and an elephant hunting scene in the foreground.

Condition: Map is in A condition with a fine impression, some faint spotting, and overall clean appearance.
