By: Scots Magazine
Date: 1759 (Published) Edinburgh in ‘The Scots Magazine’
Dimensions: 4.5 x 7 inches (11.4 cm x 17.8 cm)
This finely executed and minutely detailed miniature map depicts Quebec (City) and its environs in the mid-eighteenth century. The map was published in the journal ‘The Scots Magazine’, and provides a bird’s eye view of the city as it was at that time. Both the the St. Lawrence and St. Charles Rivers are included, with details noting both their high water and low water marks. Interestingly, there is a note describing a trail which shows ‘passage at low water’ going straight north from the northeast corner of the city.
All major architectural edifices of the day are named in a reference panel to the left of the body of the map, including such places as the Palace, the Hotel Dieu, the Jesuits College, Place of Arms, to name only a few. Also noted is the Ursuline Convent. Founded in 1639 and still operating today, it is the earliest educational institution for women in North America.
Condition: This map is in A condition with no visible condition issues. The compass rose shows the map to be oriented to the northeast.
