By: Isaak Tirion
Date: 1754 (dated) Amsterdam
Dimensions: 13.75 x 14.5 inches (34.9 x 36.2 cm)
This interesting map of the Americas by Isaak Tirion depicts both continents of the New World, with the southern continent more highly detailed than the northern continent. This is due to the centuries’ long exploration of South America which had already taken place at the time the map was made. Its major cities, ports, mountains and other geographic features are all depicted in some detail. Portions of Europe and Africa are also depicted. North America exhibits a rather unusual northwestern coast, including Martin d’Aguilar’s legendary strait, which was promoted as a Northwest Passage via the Great Lakes. California is shown as a peninsula, and Central America is somewhat out of proportion. Cities, ports and rivers on the east coast are rendered, as is the remaining periphery of the continent with cities, ports and river systems including estuaries indicated where known. Evidence of the claims of the various British and French colonies are indicated throughout, especially along the Eastern Seaboard. A compass rose embellishes the map.
Condition: This map is in A condition with very fine engraving.
