1862 Johnson’s Eastern & Western Hemisphere
By: A.J. Johnson & Browning
Date: 1762 (published) New York
Dimensions: 15.5 x 26.25 inches (39.4 x 6.7 cm)
This is an authentic antique map of the world by Alvin Johnson. The map was published out of New York by Johnson & Ward in 1862.
This detailed map offers a unique look at the world during a time of globalization and exploration into the few unknown reaches of our planet. Africa is shown as the only continent to contain a region “unexplored.” Within that region, a curiously massive lake labeled Unlamesi or Niassi Sea is shown within the region of present day Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika, though its size and shape are grossly skewed. In the Antarctic Circle a landmass with less than 50% of its coastline defined delivers an accurate representation of the lack of knowledge we had of the sub-arctic region of our planet. Antarctic exploration would not begin to increase dramatically until the beginning of the 20th century.
Condition: Map is in B+ condition, with no marginal tears, but some light browning along the centerfold. Paper and centerfold are not as brown as the image displays.
