1730 Tab. III. Europae, Galliam, Belgicam, ac Germaniae, Partem Repraesentans…
By: Ptolemy / Mercator
Date: 1730 (circa) Amsterdam
Dimensions: 13.3 x 12.2 inches (31 x 33.8 cm)
This is an authentic antique map showing France and Belgium with a partial coastline of England. The map is of the last Gerard Mercator publication, out of Amsterdam, circa 1730.
While Mercator is most known for his revolutionary projection and being the first to refer to a group of maps as an “atlas,” he devoted much of his time to studying and recreating Ptolemaic maps such as this one. This beautifully engraved map follows closely with the original by Ptolemy. It depicts political boundaries, mountains, and several river systems while noting the locations of numerous towns and cities.
Condition: Map is in A condition, with a nice impression and color on watermarked paper. There is a incomplete ring stain in the right margin which does not come close to the image. Margins are full, exceeding 2 inches on the top and bottom, and 4 inches on the sides.
