1730 Nova Designation Insulae Jamaicae ex Antillanis Americae Septentrion.
Map Maker: Matthaus Seutter
Date: 1730 circa (published) Augsburg
Dimensions: 22 x 19 inches (55.9 x 48 cm)
This map was made by the Imperial Geographer Matthaus Seutter and published circa 1730 in Augsburg.
This is a brightly colored large format map of the island of Jamaica divided by parishes. Of particular note is an early representation of the small walled parish in St. Catherine that would later become Spanish Town, a contender for the capital of Jamaica. The map itself is highly detailed with geographic features and port names. The soundings in a few harbors are included as well.
The most unique part of this map is the extravagant title cartouche. There are few other copies, if any, of this map that has such a clear impression. In the cartouche one can see natives going about the process of harvesting and curing sugar, the product that would be central to English intentions on the territory. The “Land of Wood and Water” has never been as vividly and artistically magnificent as it is here.
Condition: This map is in an A condition, due to slight soiling limited to the margins, none of which reaches the image. The splendid title cartouche remains untouched, and the map is attractively colored.
