Based on D L’Isle’s work of 1700, this stunning map of Asia, Arabia and parts of Egypt and Abyssinia is a tour de force by Chatelain. While his maps are always informative and appealing, this particular copy has especial visual appeal and contains a wealth of information regarding the areas it covers, extending from Nouvelle Zemle and the Arctic Circle in the north to Java below the equator in the south, from Finland, including Lapland, Poland, and Greece in the northwestwest to New Guinea in the southeast.    A partial list of the rivers depicted includes the Don, Volga, Euphrates, Tigris, Indus, Ganges, etc. The text describing geophysical features is alphabetized in order to facilitate finding the cities and other features named therein. The heading above one list reads ‘Alphabetic table for finding the provinces, kingdoms and peoples of this map,’ and goes on to list them.  Chatelain describes Japan using the term Terra Yeco, which was thought to be a land connecting Japan to mainland Asia. The term Terra de la Compagnie is used to denote a small region near Japan which is supposed to represent a far to the west point of North America.

Condition: This map is in A condition with some very minor small separation which have been repaired on the verso with archival material.  A strong impression on very good paper.
