1660 Barbaria
By: Joan Blaeu
Date: 1660 (circa) Amsterdam
Dimensions: 19 x 22.25 inches (48.25 x 56.5 cm)
This is an authentic antique map of the northern coast of Africa by Joan Blaeu. The map was published out of Amsterdam circa 1660, and features French text on the verso.
This lovely, decorative map focuses on the North African coastline and southern Mediterranean in two separate panels. The top panel shows the entire coast from just south of Cape Bajador to the Nile River Delta. The southern portion of Spain, Sicily, the Peloponnese peninsula (Morea), Greek Isles, and a portion of Asia Minor are also included in the panel.
The lower panel focuses on present day Algiers, from Mare Ibericum to the Island of Malta. Not much inland detail is given in either panel, but like most Blaeu maps, this map doesn’t fall short on decorative elements. Numerous sailing ships grace the Mediterranean and Atlantic, while the interior of Barbaria features a pair of lions and a cheetah. Mountain chains and rivers add topographical detail and regional borders are color coded.
