1640 Guinea
By: Jan Jansson
Date: 1640 (published) Amsterdam
Dimensions: 15 x 20.5 inches (38 x 52 cm)
This is an authentic antique map of the African Coast along the Gulf of Guinea. The map was published in Amsterdam by Jan Jansson, circa 1640.
This beautiful and geographically accurate map shows the African coast from present day Sierra Leone to Gabon and extends as far north to include the Niger River. Numerous coastal towns and ports are noted along with tributaries that extend inland from the Atlantic.
Several vignettes of indigenous animals are present throughout the map while sailing ships and sea monsters grace the ocean. A title cartouche flanked by two compass roses features two natives holding a bird, spear, and necklaces surrounded by primates. In the lower left corner of the map, two winged children honor ivory trade (which had been ongoing since the 14th century) by carrying a large tusk across the ocean.
Condition: Map is in A condition, with wide margins, and lovely hand coloring. Minor separations and chips are present along the margin edge, but are well away from the image.
