1630 Chili
By: Willem Blaeu
Date: 1630 (circa) Amsterdam
Dimensions: 14.2 x 19 inches (36. x 48.25 cm)
This is an authentic antique map of Chile by Willem Blaeu. The map was published out of Amsterdam circa 1630.
This splendid map of Chile shows what was known in the early 17th century from Antofagasta in the north to Cabo Gallegos in the south. The map is presented with an eastern orientation as noted by two large compass rose indicating north to the left. The Andes Mountains are prominently displayed with active volcanoes shown east of Villa Rica. Given the time, the map is surprisingly accurate with its placement of cities and rivers. Mapocho (with the notation of S Iago) is correctly placed in the area of present day Santiago. The map is adorned with three large cartouches, a scroll-style key, ships and sea monsters.
Condition: Map is in A condition, with exceptional color and wide margins on clean, thick paper.
