The maps detail the empire in Europe and in Asia, including Greece, Hungary and the Balkan region, the Black Sea region, and much of the Middle East.
The map on the left depicts the extent of the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th century in Europe and Asia, including Hungary and Moldavia in the north and west and extending to include all of Greece and its closest neighbors, the heel of Italy, and western Anatolia.
The map on the right depicts the Ottomans’ reach into the Middle East, extending to Circassia in the northeast and Iraq in the southeast. Both maps depict topographical features such as mountain ranges, lakes and river systems, and include insets with place names.
The maps are accompanied by text describing Turkey (the Ottoman Empire) in Europe and Asia, including borders, populations, commerce, climate, natural history, forms of government, religion, education and military forces.
The text also provides detailed information regarding historical places in the Ottoman Empire noted for important battles and sieges, beginning with Byzantium in 196 CE and continuing through 1807 when British forces were defeated by the Ottomans in Egypt.
