By: Heinricus Hondius & Jan Janssonius

Date: 1617 (published) Amsterdam

Dimensions: 14.5 x 19.5 inches (39.5 x 49.5 cm)

This is arguably the most ornate and embellished atlas maps of Italy ever produced. Boasting original color, this map presents Italy with the islands of Corsica, and Sardinia, along with the Dalmatian coast and western Albania as it was in the early 17th century.

The Italian peninsula is surrounded by sailing ships with sea monsters in the Adriatic and an embracing mermaid and merman. The title cartouche is flanked by allegorical figures while just below is a depiction of the legendary founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus, suckling their adoptive wolf mother. They appear again with profile depictions on either side of the distance scale in the lower right corner.

Condition: Map is in C+ condition. Previously mounted onto a backing board, it has since been removed and is free from any adhesive. The original outline color has oxidized through the paper in several places but is now stable having been reinforced on the verso with an archival tissue paper.
