By: Atlas School Supply Company
Date: 1892 / 1907 (Copyright) Chicago, IL
Dimensions: 34 x 48 inches (86 x 122 cm)
This is an original antique relief map of Asia by the Atlas School Supply Company, constructed in 1907 out of their headquarters in Chicago, Illinois.
The map offers a combination of political geography, physical topography, with rivers, lakes, mountains ranges, deserts, etc. noted throughout. Larger towns, cities, and geo-political boundaries are also provided. Of particular interest is the delineation of the Trans Siberian Railway of which construction began in 1891 and took 25 years to complete. The longest railway in the world, the Trans Siberian connects Moscow with Vladivostok, covering a distance of 5715 miles (9,198 km).
An impressive inset map of Japan is provided along the right-hand portion and just below the title, a vertical scale of altitude is provided with the notation that the height of elevation is exaggerated 50 times. The visualization of topography, especially that of the Himalayas would no doubt be underwhelming if the raised relief element of the map was true to size.
Condition: Map is in B+ condition, with some toning throughout and a few scratches above the title, The overall appearance is quite pleasing, with the light blue oceans blending well with the raised landscape.
