This is a striking antique map of Paris by Alvar Toussaint, dated 1856. Toussaint's map of Paris was utilized in a number of different publications that included several folding maps, some of which included a border of views from within the Paris. This example is quite scarce, printed on a single sheet of heavy paper without any views of the city.
The map centers on Île de la Cité and the Seine River. Paris is presented as a metropolis made up of 12 arrondissements (districts) and 48 quartiers (wards). Each district is outlined in color and labeled with a Roman numeral. The various districts are numbered throughout the map. Places of interest represented within this map include the Louvre, the Palace of King Louis XVI, the Champ de Mars which is now home to the Eifel Tower, and several gardens, hospitals, and government buildings.
The entire city is surrounded by the Wall of the Farmers-General, which was built in the years between 1784 and 1791. Unlike previous walls, the goal of this wall was not to defend Paris, but to collect taxes and fees on behalf of the government which caused much resentment from the public. It was eventually destroyed when the city limits were extended to the Thiers wall in 1860.
Condition: This map is in A condition with original color on heavy paper. Some soiling, paper toning, and minor tears are apparent in the wide margins but do not extend into the map image. Overall eye appeal is very fine.
