1952 The Americana Treasure Map
By: John D. Lawrence
Date: 1952 (dated) Los Angeles, CA
Dimensions: 16 x 22 inches (40.5 x 56 cm)
This is an uncommon pictorial treasure map of the United States by John D. Lawrence, published by Marvel Maps out of Los Angeles, California in 1952. As described within, the map was produced to "show the approximate locations of some of the best known lost mines, sunken and buried treasures in the Western Hemisphere according to authenticated history and legend."
Flags at sea indicate sunken and buried treasures and dots on land locate over 20 lost mines. Imagery within the map show pirates with a treasure chest, a miner panning in a river, and a ill-fated treasure seeker killed by arrows on a beach with his mule standing by. A skull and crossbones compass rose and other imagery adds to the allure of searching for pirate treasure.
With little doubt this map has e sparked the imagination and sense of adventure in many children or child-at-heart that has ever laid eyes on it and will continue to do so for years to come.
Condition: Map is in B+ condition, printed on a rather stiff parchment paper. There is some loss to the top right margin but the map image is complete and clean with ample margins for easy framing.
