Some of the Story of California & Nevada Together with a detail of the California Mission Trail
By: Peter R. Furse
Date: 1962 (dated) Laguna, California
Dimensions: 36.5 x 28 inches (93 x 71 cm)
A very rare example of a large pictorial map of California and Nevada by Peter Furse, published out of South Laguna, California in 1962. The map larger than other known examples and appears to be incomplete with regards to the coloring process. This leads us to believe this example may be an early proof state that was ultimately reduced to a smaller size before printing.
Similar in style and content to Peter Furses's other story maps of Canada and North America, this map details the rich history of California and Nevada, paying special attention to the Camino Real with a separate inset maps and description at the bottom. The painstaking work that was put into the calligraphy-style font and the vignettes depicted throughout is nothing short of impressive. The map is further embellished with three compass roses and a elaborate title cartouche that pays homage to the bountiful harvest of fruits and vegetable that can be had in the region. Surrounding the map in an intricate border presenting a variety of scenes and people that represent the history of California and Nevada.
Peter Reynolds Furse was born 29 Oct 1901 in Farnham, Hampshire, Surrey, England. He entered the Royal Navy during WWI at age 17. He was a cartographer and graduated Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge in 1922. He rose to the rank of Lt. Commander, Royal Navy. He eventually retired in Hampton, New Brunswick Canada where he became an artist.
Condition: Map is in A condition printed on heavy paper with no tears or holes and ample margins all around. There is a small smudge or stain in south-central Nevada, all else is very fine.
