1966 Some of the Explorers of North America
By: Peter R. Furse
Date: 1966 (dated) Hampton, New Brunswick
Dimensions: 26 x 20.5 inches (66 x 52 cm)
A beautiful and intricately detailed pictorial map of North America presenting 500 years of exploration at the behest of over ten different nations. This map was a follow-up work from Peter Furse's map of Canada, published two years prior in 1964. The style Furse employed remained consistent and makes his maps easily recognizable to any collector of pictorial maps.
The map is filled with numerous vignettes representing the many exploration parties and campaigns of conquest, with their size and direction of travel clearly illustrated. Dates and names accompany each vignette as well as notable firsts, accomplishments, and trails / route that were utilized. Major lines of latitude are strung out by compass roses with the arctic circle identified (like in the Canada map) by a line of polar bears and the Tropic of Cancer identified by crabs, an obvious reference to the astrological symbol for Cancer.
The lower corners feature a very decorative title cartouche and a legend national flags that identify the nationality of each exploring party in the map. Finally, the map is surrounded by an elegant border with a variety of vessels for exploration and general scenes detailing battles, marches, mining, portaging, and dog sledding to name a few. Simply out, there is no space left unutilized by Peter Furse's eye for history presented through cartographic illustration.
Condition: Map is in A+ condition boasting exceptional color on clean paper with ample margins on all sides.
