1952 Ghost Towns of the Old West
By: John D. Lawrence
Date: 1952 (dated) Los Angeles, CA
Dimensions: 16 x 22 inches (40.5 x 56 cm)
This is an uncommon map of ghost towns of the old west, located throughout California, Nevada, and Arizona. It was created by John D. Lawrence, published by Marvel Maps out of Los Angeles, California in 1952. In all, the map provides locations and information on 86 ghost towns many of which at one time were active mines.
Below the map and large reference key is a powerful scene that centers around the notion of ghosts and the wild west. Illustrated scenes of stage coach at full gallop, men firing from behind a rock, calming of a spooked horse, a miner, and a lawman appear in the clouds above a desolate town that has weathered away by wind, rain, and time. A bank, saloon, and Wells Fargo office occupy a main street where nature has since taken over.
Condition: Map is in B+ condition, printed on type of parchment paper. There is some loss to the lower left margin and a separation that has been repaired on the verso. The map image is complete and clean with ample margins for easy framing.
