Dimensions: 24 x 31.75 inches (61 x 81 cm)
A spectacular nautical chart of the Baltic Sea with the coasts of Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland beautifully rendered in original 17th century color. The map was published by the French map maker Pierre Mortier out of Amsterdam in 1693.
As with most sea charts, no detail is given beyond the coastline, but in this map, several coastal cities are represented, including that of Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Riga, and Gdańsk (Dantzik) to name a few. An inset map showing the river entrance to Dantzik is provided in the lower right. A true sea chart, this map is replete with nautical elements of geography such s rhumb lines, compass roses, depth soundings, islands, hazards, and anchorages.
Condition: Map is in very fine condition. The original coloring has oxidized enough to form several separations that have been reinforced on the verso. In the top right, a small section of the map has chipped away and been filled with archival tape.
