This interesting sea chart is the work of Captain Greenville Collins, hydrographer to the King Charles II of England in the 17th century, and one of the best known English surveyors of his day. Collins spent most of eight years on board Merlin, the king’s royal yacht, charting the waters and coastlines of Britain.

The main map depicts Kirkwall, Mainland, Shapinsay, Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre. The lower right quadrant features an inset map of the straits btween Mainland/Pomona and Hoy and includes Stromness. The lower left feautures and set chart of Tankerness and Deer Sound.

The chart shows the area in great detail, with the hazards it presents to navigation of it carefully delineated. Water depths and safe anchorages are indicated in places, as are areas of shallows.

Five coastal profiles are presented in the upper right quadrant. The compass rose, from which radiate rhumb lines in all directions, orients the map to the west.

Condition: Map is in B+ condition with some light foxing and offsetting and a lower centerfold separation that has been repaired on the verso.
