1762 Kiel - Die Herzogl. Holstein Gottorp: Residenz_See_und Handelstadt Kiel
By: Homann Heirs
Date: 1735 (published) Nuremberg
Dimensions: 21.4 x 18.3 inches (54.4 x 46.5 cm)
This Homann map depicts the major maritime city of Kiel, the capital of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, located on a fjord of the southwestern shore of the Baltic Sea. The city was officially founded in 1242 and became a member of the Hanseatic League in 1284. The city occupies an ideal position geographically, located at a point farthest inland of the Kiel fjord, thus being accessible by sea and land.
The upper portion of the map shows the city and its defenses and below it are panoramic views of Kiel from land and sea. Below these views is a detailed chart of the fjord itself, including depth soundings, the city itself, a major fortification on the fjord and the forested areas on either side of it. Two compass roses orient the map to the northwest.
Condition: This map is in excellent condition. There is damp staining in places along the top and right edge.
