1930s Chicago Board of Trade
By: Chester Danforth
Date: 1930s
Dimensions: 13 x 7 inches (33 x 17.8 cm)
A vibrant example of Chester Danforth's etching of the Chicago Board of Trade, numbered and signed in pencil, this one being #126 of 850. The view looks southbound on LaSalle with cars and pedestrians going about their business of the day.
Built in 1930 in an Art Deco style that is iconic of the period, this 44 story building is adorned with a faceless statue of Ceres, the ancient Roman goddess of agriculture and grain crops. The statue is faceless because at the time, no one expected any other buildings to be constructed within the area that would be tall enough to see facial features.
This site was recently featured in several scenes in the movie "Batman - the Dark Knight," that was released in 2008. The view down LaSalle and the Chicago Board of Trade is one that is truly representative of Chicago architecture and more specifically, that of the 1930s.
Condition: This original print is in A condition with some acid burn surrounding the image from years in matting. Margins are full on all sides and the color is vivid and beautiful.
