1828 "Vereninigte Staaten von Nord America"
By: John Melish / Weimar: Wilhen Hoffmann
Date: 1825 (circa) Germany
Dimensions: 16 x 20.5 inches (40.5 x 52 cm)
This beautiful antique map is from Carl Berhard "Reise durch Nord Amerika". A German version of Melish's important map of the United States issued in 1822. The country is depicted extending from the Atlantic seaboard to the Rocky Mountains. The newest state is Missouri, and present-day Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota are designated as the last of the "Northwest Terr."
The remainder of the Louisiana Territory is shown as the Missouri Territory and the Arkansas Territory. The area of today's Plains States is labeled "Great American Desert". Information on the Missouri and Columbia River systems are much more detailed than that found for the southwest because of the detailed maps from Lewis & Clark's expedition.
Present-day Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona are shown as possessions of Mexico, so that area is sparsely mapped. In the East, very good information is presented on towns, roads, rivers, and other points of interest. The German were very interested in the United States during the nineteenth century, and this is a fine topographical picture of the country issued for that market.
Condition: This antique is in A condition with folds and narrow bottom left margin, as issued. Some transferring, but overall very good condition.
