1840 United States of America
By: W. H. Lizars
Date: 1840 (published) Edinburgh
Dimensions: 10.25 x 12 inches (26 x 30.5 cm)
This unusual and colorful map of the United States was issued by W. H. Lizars, from this Scottish publishers series of "School Maps." Notice the decorative border for this series, which is similar to borders used by American mapmakers a decade later.
Florida is shown as an inset map and the border for the "District of Maine" is depicted from the British viewpoint as much smaller than American claims. The Northwest Territory is shown broken up, but the borders are inaccurate. This shows the lack of current information for the American frontier in Britain at the time. Towns and rivers are shown throughout and each state or territory is colored in a contrasting pastel shade.
Condition: This is an excellent condition map with original hand color and a few short repaired tears.
