This is an original and early topographical map of the Great Sand Dunes National Park, in Colorado, published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Geological Survey in 1937. This map is unique in that it is the unedited advance sheet which was subject to correction as noted in the top right.
The map is an excellent example of why this land is so unique and fascinating. The contour lines present the depth and beauty of the Sand Dunes, which are the tallest dunes in North America. They're a centerpiece in a diverse landscape of grasslands, wetlands, forests, alpine lakes, and tundra. The numerous creeks are clearly identified, as are the San Isabel National Forest, San Luis Valley, and the Sangre De Christo Mountains. Three scales of distance are provided below in miles, feet, and kilometers.
About Great Sand Dunes National Park
Great Sand Dunes National Park was established in 1932, just five years prior to the publication of this map. Located in southern Colorado, the park is approximately 167 miles in area, with 30 square miles of Dunes. They were created 440,000 years ago, after large lakes in the San Luis Valley dried up. Eventually the Dunes were formed by the right combination of wind, water, & sediment. The landscape consists of grasslands, wetlands, tundra, Aspen & Conifer forests. Activities for visitors include camping, hiking, sand sledding, sand boarding, and riding in 4-wheel drives. Over 500,000 visitors per year enjoy the beauty of this magnificent national park.
