This antique copperplate engraving is from Henri Abraham Chatelain's monumental work Atlas Historique. Published in seven volumes, it was one of the most famous and prolific works of the early 18th century.
This engraving on two portfolio sheets pasted together depicts the intermingling genealogies of royal families of Great Britain, Scotland and France from mediaeval times to the early 18th century. Small maps of England, Scotland, Ireland and France, plus portions of other countries in western Europe are rendered in some detail. Coats of arms for England, Scotland, Ireland and France are depicted. All is framed by the artistically displayed genealogical information. Descriptive French text is found in various places on the sheet.
This captivating work illustrates Chatelain’s dynamic approach to cartography, with his studies of geography, history, ethnology and heraldry evinced in this one work. In the upper right corner is noted ‘Tome 2, No 46’.
Condition: This double folio map is in B condition. Browning has occurred at the edges in places. The toning of the right folio sheet is darker (evenly so) than that of the left. This can become more or less apparent depending on the light of the room the chart is viewed in.
