1927 Roma
By: F. Cantorini
Date: 1927 (Published) Rome
Dimensions: 19 x 26 inches (48.25 x 66 cm)
An engaging pictorial map of the city of Rome, presented with the perspective of a bird's-eye view. Oriented south, the map features many Ancient Roman sites as well as several other important locations using 3-dimensional images which rise from the layout of city streets.
Through Cantorini's bird’s eye view approach, one looks down on the city facing directly along Corso Umberto towards the famous Piaa Venezia. Other landmarks included in the map are the Castel Sant’Angelo, the Forum, Villa Borghese, and the Colosseum. Near the bottom right corner, Cantorini includes Vatican City, showcasing the Obelisk of the Piaa San Pietro, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica.
The map is coloured primarily in muted greens and earth tones. It is divided into evenly-spaced sections, with letters A through I on the vertical axis and numbers 1 through 8 on the horizontal axis. Rather atypically for a city plan map, the horizon is shown at the top of the map. Cantorini used this challenging and impressive perspective to deliver a dynamic and engaging example of early 20th century Italian cartography.
Condition: Map is in B condition with a short tear repaired in the top left margin. Other minor fold separations have been reinforced on the verso using archival materials. Originally issued in a booklet, the map was at some point removed and flattened.
