The Greater Antilles (Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, Puerto Rico) take up the center of the map, with the Lesser Antilles off to the right. The upper right hand corner shows Pierre Belain d’Esnambuc’s 1635 establishment of the colony of St Pierre, on the island of Martinique. Also included are portraits of Christopher Colombus, Faustin Soulouque, Toussaint Louverture––the most prominent leader of the Haitian Revolution––and Daniel Monbars, a violent French pirate known as Monbars the Exterminator.
