This pictorial map of the Mediterranean region is a fine example of the work of Blondel la Rougery, a leading cartography company in twentieth century France. Produced in 1948, Blondel la Rougery’s map is a wonderful example of pictorial cartography.
The Mediterranean Sea takes up the center of the map, with Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, and North Africa also pictured. The map highlights important cities of the region like Rome, Byzance (Istanbul), and Athens. Around the print are vignettes of historical scenes and figures. The lower right hand corner shows Odysseus and the Sirens from Homer’s Odyssey, as well as the Lighthouse of Alexandria.
The map is in full color with beautiful detail and finely produced illustrations. With its fascinating historical detail, this map by Blondel la Rougery is a beautiful example of mid-century mapmaking and pictorial cartography.
