By: Sopexa
Date: 1970s (circa) France
Dimensions: 34 x 25 inches (86.5 x 63.5 cm)
This is an original vintage pictorial map of the Côtes du Rhône winemaking region of France, flanking the Rhône river in the southeastern part of the country. The Rhône region is generally divided into two subregions with distinct winemaking traditions. The Northern Rhône produces red wines from the Syrah grape, and white wines from Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier grapes. The Southern Rhône produces a variety of red, white, and rosé wines, often using blends of several grapes.
The left third of the map shows women in colorful dresses holding baskets of grapes. Above them is a sketch of a village from the Rhône region, with some roofs and walls colored in yellow, brown, and orange. The women and the village are surrounded by yellow and orange leaves. The middle third shows the area of wine production, highlighting cities like Vienne, Valence, and Avignon. The right third of the map depicts winemakers hauling and inspecting baskets of grapes, shown next to a large orange sun and another sketch of a local town. At the top is the title text “Les vignobles de France” (“The vineyards of France”), and at the bottom is the subheading “Vins des Côtes du Rhône” (“Wines from Côtes du Rhône”).
