This is an authentic WWII era ball sextant made by Mergenthaler Linotype Co. for the United States Navy. The sextant comes in its original wooden box with a brass plate on the front end that offers a serial number that matches the one on the sextant. This is quite unique to have a matching serial number on the box and instrument. The sextant is complete with separate viewing tubes for both night and day.

The idea behind the design of the Ball Recording Sextant was to have an instrument that could take the altitude of the sun or stars without the need for a horizon. Once unlatched, the sextant remains nearly vertical which allows the balls to fall with gravity while one keeps an object in the crosshairs of the viewer. Once the balls have settled at the bottom, their pattern determines an angle with the use of the micrometer.

Condition: This sextant is in fine condition with some light scratches and abrasions to the outside of the case. The sextant is believed to be in working order as all the parts are accounted for and in place, though we have not tested it on any voyages.
