This is an original print of a city scene in Chicago showing the Old Post Office on Dearborn and Monroe Street as it would have looked just 6 years prior to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
This print was published by Sidney Z. Lucas whom attained the rights from A. Ackermann & Son, a British publisher, with offices in Paris, Chicago and New York. Ackerman & Son were the primary print publishers for Raoul Varin (1865 - 1943) a French watercolorist who became well known around the turn of the 20th century. He made just over 30 different views of Chicago as it would have looked in the years before and after the Chicago Fire.
This print is engraved in aquatint, which is an intaglio printmaking technique that produces a tone rather than lines, giving it a visual effect resembling a watercolor. It is produced from a copper plate that is etched with nitric acid. A plate impression can be seen and felt surrounding the image at title.
Condition: This print is in A condition with bright and bold color on clean paper with full margins. The print was originally acquired rolled with some creases. It has since be flattened and linen backed for preservation and presentation purposes.
