An extraordinary historical relic of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, Columbian Exposition preserved in excellent condition and in need of a new home for the next hundred years.
This all encompassing guide to Chicago and the Columbian exposition features one of the most superb 19th century views not only of Chicago, but of any city from the same era of lithographic printmaking. Still attached to the original inside cover and unfolding to over 50 inches, the "Grand Panoramic View of the Heart of Chicago," as seen from atop the Monadnock building offers a unique 360° perspective of what was at the time one of the world's fastest growing cities.
The additional contents of Melville's is best described within the introduction as a "large profusely illustrated and richly bound volume, depicting in a most comprehensive way the marvelous story of Chicago. Her Architectural, Commercial, Educational, Religious, Musical and Artistic tastes and achievements are graphically described and illustrated with the beauties of the World's Fair."
Bound to the inside of the back cover is a folding "Map of the Buildings and Grounds of the World's Columbian Exposition at Jackson Park and Midway Plaisance." The map offers a very useful key to the Midway Plaisance, the state and foreign buildings, and other buildings and arrangements. Just as this would have been a most useful book to a visitor of Chicago and the Columbian Exposition, it is just as useful to any Chicago or World's Fair history enthusiast.
Condition: The panoramic view and folding map are in excellent condition with no tears, fold separations or holes. The book itself is in very good condition with fairly clean covers and all pages firmly bound within the unbroken spine.
Note: As the images were taken with a camera and not our scanner, some paper toning and saturation may be slight off or different from one another, especially when comparing the images of the panoramic view.
