1815 Spain and Portugal.
By: John Thomson
Date: 1815 (Published) Edinburgh
Dimensions: 19.75 x 23.75 inches (50.17 x 59 cm)
This handsome large format map from Thomson’s New General Atlas features the entire Iberian Peninsula, and includes a portion of France and northern Africa. The map is engraved in the minimalist English style pioneered in the early part of the 19th century, a style which reduced maps’ decorative elements to a minimum. Relief is shown by hachure with towns, cities, and major topographical features identified.
Spain’s spectacular mountain ranges are beautifully rendered in hachure, resulting in the map making a strong visual impact. The Balearic Islands are shown in detail, and many cities and ports of northern Africa are included. This work by Thomson is considered one of the finest maps of the Iberian Peninsula to be published in the 19th century.
Condition: This superb large format map on heavy paper is in A condition. There is one small worm hole and some offsetting but the visual impact of the map is not significantly impacted. Original coloring.
