By: Matthaus Seutter / Tobias Conrad Lotter

Date: 1740 (published) Augsburg

Dimensions: 19.75 x 22.75 inches (50.12 x 57.75 cm)

This is a striking mid-18th century map of the Turkish empire by Tobias Conrad Lotter. The map was first published by Matthias Seutter and then re-issued by Lotter in 1740 out of Augsburg.

The map centers on the holy land and extends far enough to include much of the Balkans, Northern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, much of Persia, the Caspian and Black seas. The map is colored to shows the various regions under Turkish control during the long reign of the Ottoman Empire.

At the time of printing Murad IV was the reigning Sultan of the Ottomans. He was known for both for restoring the authority of the state and for the brutality of his methods. In 1639, he reasserted central authority and recaptured Iraq  from the Safavids. The resulting Treaty of Zuhab of that same year decisively divided the Caucasus and adjacent regions between the two neighboring empires as it had been defined in the 1555 Peace of Amasya.

The map is adorned in the lower left with an elaborate and decorative title cartouche with three scales if distance. A key or legend for the map appears in the lower right.

Condition: This map is in B condition with one hole near the Red Sea in on the side of the Arabian Peninsula. It has been reinforced on the verso with archival materials.
