This large map of Maui is arguably the most detailed map of the island published in the 19th century, this example being the revised 1903 state. The map offers a wide array of topographic and geographic details including elevation changes, land ownership, land deemed for agricultural purposes, and homesteads. The names of land owners and grant numbers are noted throughout as are many towns, such as Lahaina, Makena, Kihei (spelled Kehei), Hana, and Kihului to name a few.
Though no key can be found within the map relating to the various colors used, a key for another map of the same publication published tells us the following.
- Blue Dot: School
- Red Dot: Post Office
- Green Shade: Public Lands
- Yellow Shade: Homestead Settlement Tracts
- Yellow Borders: Grazing Lands
- Red Borders: Sugar Plantations
- Blue Borders: Forest Reserves
- Dashed Blue Borders: Forest Lands not in Reserves
- Blue Diagonal Lines: Wet Lands (Rice and Taro)
This spectacular map is no doubt a statement piece for anyone with ties to or a fondness of the Island of Maui. It's massive size and bold colors will be a focal point for any room in which it is hung.
Condition: This folding map was flattened and linen-backed for preservation and presentation purposes. There are a few areas of fold separations found in the lower left.
