This Munster woodcut provides an early interesting view of the Baltic and North Sea regions, featuring countries of northern latitudes including Sweden, Goten, Norway, Denmark, Lapland, Russia, Greenland and Iceland. The map was first featured in the 1579 version of Munster’s Cosmography, one of the most important and influential geographical works of the 16th century.
The map is based on the 1573 work of Abraham Ortelius and includes many of the mythical islands of the region such as Frisland and Icaria near Iceland, and farther west is a region labeled as Estotiland which is shown as part of North America. Other mythical islands are also featured.
Condition: This map is in B condition. Centerfold separations have been repaired with archival material on the verso. The border is uneven in places.
