By: Jean Francois Galaup de La Perouse
Date: 1798 (Published) London
Dimensions: 14 x 19.25 inches (35.6 x 48.9 cm)
This is a nice example of La Perouse's important 1787 mapping of the Sea of China and many islands in it, with the region from Japan and southern Korea extending south as far as the Philippines and Marianes Islands. Also covered is the eastern coast of China and the island of Formosa.
La Perouse’s course with the ships Boussole and Astrolabe is charted day by day, with dates all depicted from their departure from Manila on 12 April finally passing between the southern shores of Korea and Japan. The course then continues to the north before ending at the map’s border with the date of 28 May.
The map contains interesting notes including place names, mountain ranges and other topographical features, as well as depth soundings in places. French nobleman de la Perouse was a naval officer, explorer and cartographer. He was one of the titans of Pacific exploration, one whose work paved the path forward for all future expeditions to the region.
