This hand colored wood engraving out of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Gazette depicts a scene of some wealthy, local Chicagoans enjoying a day by the lake. The curiously placed fable Still Waters Run Deep rests on the bench beneath a well dressed gentleman attempting to court a young lady.  The old latin proverb suggests a placid exterior hides a passionate or subtle nature.

The title and geographic orientation of the image suggests that the view is from a pier out of Lincoln Park, a neighborhood just north of the city.  In the background, sailing ships punctuate the water line of the lake while an early Chicago skyline portrays the city in its early industrial form.
