This Chatelain engraving depicts seven of the most important Dutch trading outposts and fortifications in the East Indies in the early eighteenth century. The four harbour views are of Batavia (Jakarta), Amboina, Ternate and Solor. Three forts are shown. These seven precisely detailed vignettes portray some of the major endeavours and accomplishments following the founding of the Dutch East Indies Company in the early 17th century. French text accompanies each vignette.
