DESCRIPTION

Produced in Bavaria circa 1916, this schraubtaler is struck in zinc (Zinkmedaille), reflecting the material shortages of World War I when precious metals were reserved for the war effort. Combining medallic form with printed imagery, it functions as a compact visual chronicle of Bavaria’s role in the conflict, presenting a narrative of leadership, warfare, and national identity within its screw-open construction.

Obverse and Reverse

The obverse features a right-facing bust of Ludwig III of Bavaria in military uniform, encircled by LUDWIG III KOENIG VON BAYERN. The reverse displays the crowned Bavarian coat of arms supported by two lions beneath the motto IN TREUE FEST, with BAYERNTHALER 1914/16 below, firmly situating the piece within the wartime period. The zinc composition gives the medal a matte gray tone distinct from earlier silver examples.

Narrative of the Interior Scenes

Inside, a complete series of color lithographed roundels unfolds as a cohesive wartime narrative, moving from patriotic dedication through mobilization, battle, leadership, and the home front. The sequence blends portraiture with scenes of modern industrial warfare, offering a curated account of Bavaria’s experience:

  • Dedication to Bavarian soldiers, honoring loyalty and sacrifice
  • Portrait of Ludwig III, reinforcing royal authority
  • Portrait of Wilhelm II, symbolizing imperial unity
  • Mobilization of August 1914, troops marching to the front
  • Advance through Belgium, marking early western campaigns
  • Heavy artillery and siege scenes, emphasizing industrial warfare
  • Trench combat, illustrating front-line conditions
  • Portrait of Paul von Hindenburg, representing command leadership
  • Naval warfare and U-boats, including Otto Weddigen
  • Aviation and Zeppelin imagery, highlighting technological innovation
  • Eastern Front victories, including Warsaw and Lemberg
  • Home front labor and agriculture, underscoring total war effort
  • Commemorative inscription panel, intended for personalization

Unlike earlier silver schraubtalers, this zinc example reflects the realities of wartime production, where symbolic value outweighed intrinsic metal content. It stands as a vivid piece of wartime propaganda and material culture, blending medallic tradition with modern print imagery to tell the story of Bavaria in the First World War.
