DESCRIPTION

This finely engraved and beautifully colored map of North America was published in Amsterdam around 1719 by Henri Abraham Chatelain as part of his monumental Atlas Historique. The map focuses on the inhabited regions of the continent and presents the vast extent of New France, stretching from the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes through the Mississippi Valley to the Gulf of Mexico. Based largely on Nicolas De Fer’s rare four-sheet map of 1718, Chatelain’s one-sheet version became one of the most influential depictions of French North America in the early eighteenth century.

The geography highlights the great river systems that formed the backbone of the French colonial world. From Quebec and Montreal, French influence extended through the Great Lakes and deep into the interior along the Mississippi River, linking Canada with Louisiana. Numerous Indigenous nations are identified throughout the region, including the Hurons, Iroquois, and Illinois, illustrating the network of alliances, trade, and diplomacy that allowed France to maintain influence across vast territories with relatively few European settlements.

Exploration of the Mississippi

At the upper left appears a large inset map of the Mississippi Delta and Mobile Bay, derived from the 1699 voyage of Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville, the explorer credited with establishing the first French presence on the lower Mississippi. His expedition charted the mouth of the river and many of its tributaries, including the Red River in Arkansas, helping to clarify the geography of the Gulf Coast and the lower Mississippi basin. This inset first appeared on De Fer’s large map of 1718 and was retained by Chatelain as an important visual record of French exploration in the region.

Imperial Ambitions and the Mississippi Bubble

The map also reflects the political and economic ambitions behind French expansion in North America. De Fer’s original map was produced at a time when the French crown promoted settlement in Louisiana through the Compagnie Française d’Occident, a venture associated with the financial schemes of John Law. The company was intended to help finance the debts left by the reign of Louis XIV while encouraging migration to the Mississippi Valley. The speculative frenzy surrounding these ventures ultimately culminated in the infamous Mississippi Bubble, one of the most dramatic financial collapses of the eighteenth century.

Decoration and Cartographic Detail

Like many maps produced for Chatelain’s Atlas Historique, the sheet is richly embellished with decorative and illustrative elements. The seas are animated with sailing ships, while the interior features Indian villages, hunting scenes, wildlife, and descriptive notes scattered across the landscape. At the lower right, an elaborate cartouche encloses a plan and view of Quebec, the principal city of French Canada, accompanied by a scenic perspective of the fortified settlement along the St. Lawrence River.

Combining detailed geography with political context and decorative artistry, the map provides a vivid portrayal of French North America at the height of its imperial ambitions. It captures a moment when France claimed an immense continental empire connected by rivers, exploration routes, and trading alliances that stretched from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.
